INTRODUCTION

Turmeric Essential Oil is primarily produced through steam distillation of the rhizomes of the turmeric plant (Curcuma longa L.). Its main chemical constituents belong to the sesquiterpenoid group, with ar-turmerone, α-turmerone, and β-turmerone (curlone) often accounting for significant proportions, along with compounds such as ar-curcumene, zingiberene, and β-sesquiphellandrene. The composition of the essential oil may vary depending on the plant variety, raw material source, and distillation conditions.

Turmeric Essential Oil has attracted attention in skin care due to the anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, and antibacterial activities associated with turmerones. In particular, ar-turmerone, one of the characteristic constituents of Turmeric Essential Oil, has been studied for its ability to modulate inflammatory responses through effects on cytokines and signaling pathways involved in inflammation. In a mouse model of psoriasis-like skin inflammation, topical application of ar-turmerone reduced certain inflammatory signs and decreased the expression of inflammatory mediators such as TNF-α and IL-6. These findings suggest the potential of Turmeric Essential Oil and turmerones in cosmetic formulations designed to soothe and care for skin exposed to environmental stressors.

Antibacterial activity is another notable property of Turmeric Essential Oil. Studies on the essential oil and ar-turmerone have demonstrated inhibitory effects against certain microorganisms. Ar-turmerone, in particular, has been investigated for its activity against Gram-positive bacteria, including Staphylococcus aureus and Staphylococcus epidermidis. These properties provide a basis for exploring Turmeric Essential Oil in skin care and cleansing products, especially formulations designed for oily skin or skin requiring support in maintaining a balanced skin surface microbiome.

Notably, a study evaluating the cosmetic potential of various essential oils found that Curcuma longa essential oil exhibited activity relevant to mature skin care, including effects related to collagenase and elastase enzymes. In the same study, turmerone showed notable interactions with these enzymes in experimental models. These findings suggest the potential use of Turmeric Essential Oil in formulations for mature skin, helping support skin firmness and a healthy appearance.

With its combination of antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and antibacterial properties, as well as its potential applications in mature skin care, Turmeric Essential Oil is a valuable plant-derived ingredient for natural-oriented skin care products.

APPLICATIONS
