Introduction to Bitter Melon Extract

Bitter melon, scientifically known as Momordica charantia, belongs to the Cucurbitaceae family and is also known in Vietnam by several common names, including "mướp đắng", "mướp mủ", and "chua hao". This fruit is widely cultivated in Vietnam and many tropical regions worldwide [3].

The characteristic bitterness of bitter melon mainly comes from momordicin and triterpene glycosides. As the fruit matures or ripens, this bitterness often becomes more pronounced [1]. The fruit flesh contains several notable bioactive compounds, including saponins, momordicin, charantin, and polypeptide-p. These constituents have attracted interest for their pharmacological value, particularly in studies investigating their potential blood glucose-lowering and anti-inflammatory effects [2].
