WHAT IS MANGOSTEEN PERICARP?

Mangosteen (Garcinia mangostana L.) is a tropical fruit widely known in Vietnam. While its edible flesh is prized for its delicious flavor, the dark purple outer pericarp has attracted scientific interest due to its rich content of natural compounds, particularly xanthones, with α-mangostin being a prominent representative.

Mangostin compounds in mangosteen pericarp have been investigated using chemical analytical methods, helping to clarify the potential value of this plant material as a source of botanical ingredients. In addition, studies on extraction conditions have contributed to a better understanding of how target compounds can be recovered from the fruit pericarp.

Furthermore, the pericarp of Lai Thieu mangosteen has been investigated for its activity against certain microorganisms under experimental conditions in Vietnam (1). These findings contribute to a better understanding of the potential of mangosteen pericarp as a botanical material for herbal research and the development of natural-origin products.

WHAT IS MANGOSTEEN EXTRACT?

Mangosteen Extract is an ingredient obtained by extracting compounds from the mangosteen fruit. The fruit pericarp is commonly used as a starting material for developing ingredients intended for research and cosmetic applications.

Mangosteen pericarp contains compounds belonging to the xanthone group, among which α-mangostin and γ-mangostin have attracted particular interest in studies investigating biological activities. However, the composition and concentration of the extracted compounds may vary depending on the starting material and extraction method (2)(3).

In the cosmetics industry, mangosteen pericarp extract has been investigated for its antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and antibacterial activities, as well as its potential applications in anti-aging formulations. These research areas suggest potential uses in skin care formulations. Actual efficacy should be evaluated based on the characteristics of each extract, its conditions of use, and the results of testing on the finished product.

KEY BENEFITS OF MANGOSTEEN EXTRACT

1. Antioxidant Activity

→ Mangosteen pericarp contains compounds with antioxidant properties that may help neutralize free radicals and support the protection of skin cells against oxidative stress (2).

2. Anti-inflammatory Activity

→ Mangosteen Extract has demonstrated potential anti-inflammatory activity, including effects observed in protein denaturation assays. In particular, α-mangostin may reduce the release of pro-inflammatory cytokines, such as IL-8 and IL-6, in keratinocytes, potentially contributing to skin-soothing applications (2)(3).

3. Antibacterial Activity

→ Mangosteen pericarp extract has demonstrated inhibitory activity against Staphylococcus aureus and Staphylococcus epidermidis, suggesting potential applications in skin care products intended for blemish-prone and inflammation-prone skin.

4. Tyrosinase Inhibition

→ Mangosteen Extract may inhibit tyrosinase, an enzyme involved in melanin biosynthesis. This activity suggests potential applications in formulations designed to improve the appearance of uneven skin tone.

APPLICATIONS

Mangosteen Extract may be incorporated into skin care products such as serums, moisturizing creams, gels, facial masks, and products intended for blemish-prone skin. These formulations may be developed to target antioxidant protection, skin soothing, and improvements in the appearance of uneven skin tone.
