INTRODUCTION
Ming aralia leaf extract (Polyscias Fruticosa Leaf Extract) is obtained from the leaves of Polyscias fruticosa, a valuable medicinal plant belonging to the Araliaceae family. In Vietnamese folk culture, the plant is known by several names and is often referred to as “Vietnamese ginseng” due to its notable medicinal value.
This perennial shrub is native to Southeast Asia and the Pacific Islands. It is now widely cultivated in Vietnam and several other countries, including Indonesia, the Philippines, and India. The plant is grown for ornamental purposes, used as a culinary herb, and utilized in traditional medicine.
Botanically, the plant usually grows to a height of approximately 1–2 meters and has thornless stems. Its compound leaves are deeply divided with serrated margins, while its tuberous roots have a distinctive aroma. In traditional medicine, Ming aralia leaves are described as mildly bitter, neutral in nature, and subtly aromatic.
Leaf decoctions have traditionally been used to help clear internal heat, support detoxification, and manage fever, coughing up blood, and allergy-related rashes. Fresh crushed leaves have also been applied topically to help soothe inflammation and discomfort associated with wounds, swelling, and musculoskeletal pain. In addition to their traditional medicinal uses, the leaves are commonly consumed as a culinary herb in everyday Vietnamese meals.
Ming aralia leaves are a rich source of bioactive compounds, including saponins, alkaloids, glycosides, polyphenols, flavonoids, tannins, vitamin C, B vitamins, and various amino acids. Among these compounds, saponins are particularly notable and contribute significantly to the plant’s biological properties. Polyphenols and flavonoids also enhance the potential application of Ming aralia leaf extract in cosmetics and personal care products [1].
KEY BENEFITS OF MING ARALIA LEAF EXTRACT
Antioxidant Activity
Owing to its significant polyphenol and flavonoid content, Ming aralia leaf extract has demonstrated promising antioxidant potential [1]. These compounds help neutralize free radicals and limit lipid peroxidation, thereby protecting cells against oxidative stress and supporting healthier-looking skin [2].
Anti-Inflammatory Support
The presence of alkaloids, steroids, saponins, flavonoids, tannins, and vitamins contributes to the extract’s potential anti-inflammatory activity. As a result, the ingredient may help soothe the skin, reduce discomfort, and support the care of sensitive or environmentally stressed skin.
Support for Skin Microcirculation
The saponins present in Ming aralia leaves are also believed to support microcirculation beneath the skin. This effect may help the skin appear fresher and healthier while supporting its natural renewal processes.
COSMETIC APPLICATIONS
Owing to its antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties and its potential to support skin microcirculation, Ming aralia leaf extract can be incorporated into various cosmetic and personal care products.
